New RN GAP Training Program
The Valley Health System is proud to announce the RN GAP Training Program!
Nurses that have more than 12 months experience outside the acute care setting and have graduated 12 months prior.
To provide the non-new graduate nurse with additional training due to chronological gap in practice and/or limited experience in the acute care setting.
The timeline consists of three weeks. Participants will complete of three 8-hour Med-Surg internship classes, two 8-hour Gap Training classes, and one 4-hour Simulation lab, for a total of 44 hours. In addition, the nurses will be following their preceptor for 2 days on the Med-Surg unit. The classes are mandatory and should not be missed.
To transition great seasoned nurses to provide excellent care in the Med-Surg arena.
All classes are held at the Education and Training Center.
The content of the GAP program will include nurse resourcing, critical thinking, pain management, medication errors, ethical decision making, core measures, HCAHPS, leadership and conflict management, fall prevention and management, nursing documentation (legal aspects and responsibilities), and case studies.
In addition, the Med-Surg Internship classes will cover diabetes, heparin, EKG, ortho, ostomy, tracheostomy, chest tubes, sepsis, surgical dressings, wound care, abg’s, antibiotic stewardship, CBI and Foley post TURP, critical labs, critical thinking and SBAR, IV therapy, time management and delegation.
These classes will all have interactive activities and simulations to engage the nurses to be part of their learning.
